IFS Trauma Therapy in Ann Arbor, MI

Are you ready to think about your mental health in a different way?

We all use “parts “ language on a daily basis. There is a part of you that wants to save money but another part really wants to go to that concert. In an IFS framework we look at the roles parts like people pleasing, and perfectionism play in your life. Building a connection with the parts to help them realize they can do something else or “turn down the volume”. I know it can sound hokey but IFS can truly foster a deep sense of compassion and confidence within yourself.

Let’s be curious together!

What is IFS?

  • Imagine your mind as a big house with lots of different rooms, each representing a different part of you. Some rooms might be filled with joyful memories and positive feelings, while others might hold painful memories or difficult emotions.

In IFS therapy, we explore these different parts of you and how they interact with each other. We might meet the "protectors," which are the parts of you that try to keep you safe by controlling your emotions or behaviors. Then, there are the "exiles," which are the parts that hold onto painful memories or emotions that you might prefer to avoid.

The goal of IFS therapy is to help these parts of you communicate and work together more harmoniously. By understanding each part's role and listening to what they need, we can help you become more balanced and resilient.

Ultimately, the aim is to help you connect with your true Self, which is the core of who you are and holds connection, compassion, and courage.

  • IFS does not focus on treating a disorder or labeling your symptoms/behaviors as “problems”. It can be less stigmatizing than other trauma treatments. Creating room for clarity and a sense of calm.

IFS focuses on wisdom you hold and helps you learn to cultivate that wisdom.

  • TOTALLY!

Think of IFS as helping you understand your inner world—your different thoughts and feelings. EMDR then steps in to help process any tough memories you're struggling with. Sometimes a part may block us access to a painful memory. Working with that part then allows us to reprocess with EMDR.

They're like a tag team, helping you feel stronger, more at ease, and ready to move forward.

  • IFS therapy can vary in duration depending on individual circumstances and goals. Some people may notice positive changes early on, while others may take longer to experience significant shifts. It's important to be patient and trust in the process, allowing time for exploration, understanding, and healing to unfold at your own pace.
